Why do people hide a bad reading?

If a bad number costs points,
people stop writing it.

Picture the walk-in at 46. If a bad number cost you points, would you write it down?

  • A reading scores the same whether it passes or not.
  • No rule takes points away. A true record is what an inspector reads.
  • Health check-in answers earn nothing, so nobody is paid for an answer.

So how do points work?

Same points,
pass or fail.

Type a reading in range, then one out of range. Both score the same. Tap the rest to see what else adds points.

    What do the lessons cover?

    Nine lessons.
    About two minutes each.

Together they take about 19 minutes, and they end with 11 quiz questions.

    • People and hands: don't work sick, wash your hands, no bare hands on ready-to-eat food.
    • Temperatures and storage: temperatures that matter, use and calibrate a thermometer, store, label and thaw.
    • Clean and report: cross-contamination and allergens, clean then sanitize, report problems right away.
    • Volunteers take a fast lane of 3 lessons and 1 signature, about 7 minutes.

Open a lesson in the demo and see how short it is.

    How is it signed?

    Type your full name
    to sign.

Seven short forms: hands, gloves, illness, sink, chemicals, allergens and food. Only you can sign for yourself.

    • Each sign-off keeps the name, the time and the words that were signed.
    • If the words change, people sign again.
    • It is a record that a person read it and agreed. A typed name is not a legally verified e-signature.

    How do I say thanks?

    One tap.
    Only they see it.

Pick one of five thank-yous. It goes to that person and nobody else.

    • Nice catch!
    • Right on time. Thank you!
    • Great fix!
    • Spotless work!
    • Thank you for your help today.

    Do I owe people prizes?

    You give rewards yourself.
    The app never handles money.

You decide the reward, if any. You mark it given.

    • The team goal is on by default.
    • A named weekly board is a ranking. It is off unless an owner turns it on. The streak bonus is off too.

    Where the lessons come from

    Each lesson has
    a rule behind it.

The lessons teach these rules in short steps. The state food handler course is separate, and you take it elsewhere.

    • Utah food handler permit

Food handlers finish an approved course within 14 days of starting and get a county permit within 30 days. Valid 3 years.

      Utah Code 26B-7-413; R392-103; R392-102-4(14)

Does your county differ? 3 of Utah's 13 health departments do

Utah law: course by day 14, permit by day 30, valid statewide. Southwest Utah: their page says get the permit before handling food. Southwest Utah food page

Utah law: a permit from any Utah health department is valid statewide. Summit County: check with them (their Code says they "may" accept another county's card). Summit County Code of Health §1-6-5(A)(3)

Utah law: course by day 14, permit by day 30, valid statewide. Weber-Morgan: their regulation says have the permit before you start work. Weber-Morgan Food Service Sanitation Regulation §6.20 (2-103.12(B))

Do you need a food handler permit in Utah?
    • Handwashing

Wash hands and forearms 20 seconds at a handwashing sink only; double wash after the restroom; sanitizer never replaces washing.

      Food Code 2-301.12, 2-301.14, 2-301.15, 2-301.16, 5-202.12; R392-102-14(4)–(8)

How long should food workers wash their hands?
    • No bare-hand contact with ready-to-eat food

Use tongs, deli tissue, waxed paper or gloves; single-use gloves for one task; bare-hand contact only with county approval and records.

      Food Code 3-301.11, 3-304.15, 2-401.13; R392-102-14(1)–(3) (trucks: no bare-hand variance)

What else can the inspector check? 1 more rule
    • Allergens and cross-contact

Tell customers in writing which of the 9 major allergens are ingredients in each unpackaged food; label allergens; prevent cross-contact with separate utensils and pitchers, fresh gloves, and washing (sanitizer doesn't remove allergens).

Food Code 1-201.10(B), 3-602.12(C); FALCPA; FASTER Act

What goes on a food label in a restaurant?

    Read the guides

Each rule has a guide the crew can read on a phone.

    What are the limits?

    What the lessons
    are not.

Lessons before food work are your own house rule. Utah law does not ask for them.

    • A typed name is a record that a person read and agreed.
    • The lessons do not replace the state food handler course.
    • Spanish is for the check-in only.

A typed name is not a legally verified e-signature.

Ready for a team that tells the truth?

    Thank the right ones.

Start with the team goal. Leave the rest off until you want it.

    • Your new cook learns the first week's rules in short lessons.
    • Nobody loses points for writing down a bad reading.

    Questions

    Before you
    start.

Do points go down if a reading is bad?

No. A reading scores the same whether it passes or not, and no rule takes points away.

    Is there a leaderboard?

Not by default. The team goal is on. The named weekly board and streak bonus are off until an owner turns them on.

    Who sees kudos?

Only the person who gets them.

Do the lessons replace the state food handler course?

No. The state course is required by Utah law and taken elsewhere.

Is a typed name a legal signature?

It is a record of the name, the time and the words signed. It is not a legally verified e-signature.

    Who pays for rewards?

You do, if you choose to give them. The app never handles money.
