How do I get sugar and syrup out of an apron or uniform?

Sources last checked

A pump of vanilla syrup dripped onto your apron.

The short answer

Sugar browns when heated, so flush it out before any heat. (Pacific Northwest Extension; American Cleaning Institute)

Do this now

  1. Lift off the extra with a blunt knife. (American Cleaning Institute)
  2. Flush it from the back with cool to warm water. (American Cleaning Institute)

What to use

  1. Soak it in warm water with a little dish soap and vinegar. (University of Georgia Extension)

Before the dryer

  1. Look at the spot before the dryer. Heat sets it. (American Cleaning Institute; New Mexico State University Extension)

Never do this

When to give up

Check the care tag first. Test any stain remover on a hidden spot. A stain that sets in the dryer is much harder to move, so look before you dry.

This is general information, not legal advice. Rules can change and your local health department has the final say. Check with them before you open or change how you work. CleanCleaver is a food safety app, not a laundry authority: follow your garment's care tag.
