How do I get sweat out of an apron or uniform?

Sources last checked

A hot line shift left a yellow ring under the arms.

The short answer

Sweat can change the color of the cloth. Treat it before you wash. (American Cleaning Institute; Pacific Northwest Extension)

Do this now

  1. Rub in a prewash stain remover, or bar soap. (American Cleaning Institute)

What to use

  1. Soak it in warm water with an enzyme product for 20 to 30 minutes. (Texas A&M AgriLife Extension; American Cleaning Institute)
  2. Use ammonia on a fresh color change, white vinegar on an old one. (American Cleaning Institute; Pacific Northwest Extension)

Before the dryer

  1. Look at the spot before the dryer. Heat sets it. (American Cleaning Institute; New Mexico State University Extension)

Never do this

When to give up

Check the care tag first. Test any stain remover on a hidden spot. A stain that sets in the dryer is much harder to move, so look before you dry.
