For New York kitchen and cafe staff

It is 30 seconds before you touch food
. You tap yes or no. You get back to work, and the next thing due, like the milk fridge temperature, is already on your phone.

5:55 am, your second day
Why is there
an app for this?
You already know what to do.
Wash your hands. Take the fridge temperature. Stay home when you are sick. On your second day, with wet hands, the grinder running and the line building, it is hard to hold all of it in your head.
The app is the reminder at the right moment, and the record that you did it. That is all it is for.
Your shift
What does a shift
look like?
Here is one shift. It is an example, not a real person.
Check in
Answer the yes or no questions. Wash your hands. Tap done.
Do what is due
The Do tab shows the one thing due now, like the milk fridge temperature, with the rule beside it. The app's limit is 41°F: New York City's rule (Health Code 81.09), and colder than the state's 45°F outside the city (10 NYCRR 14-1.40). Type the number.
Write the fix
The app asks what you did. Then it says
Caught early ✓
.Report it
The soap is out, the sink is cold: add a photo, or say it out loud instead of typing.
Back to work
Nothing else is due right now.
Try the fix screen with sample data.
Your card
Do I need a food handler card
in New York?
There is no statewide card. Your county decides, and some counties ask for one.
New York law has no food handler card. Your county health department can require training (10 NYCRR 14-1.73), and several do. In Monroe County a certified food worker is present whenever the place is open. A Level 2 food handler certificate lasts 3 years, a Level 1 manager certificate 5 years. In Tioga County someone on duty holds the county's Red Card, good for 2 years, or ServSafe. In Chautauqua County one person in management does a 3-hour county course, good for 5 years. Westchester County wants food-allergen-trained staff. In the five boroughs, the Food Protection Certificate holder who supervises the food work may be your manager, not you. The online course is free. The exam is paid and in person.
Who pays for a county course is not something we found in New York's rule; ask your manager.
Your certificate goes in the app once. Your manager sees the date it runs out, and so do you.
A certificate on file shortens your first-day list in the app.
No smartphone
What if I have
no smartphone?
Use the shop tablet.
Tap your name. Type your 4 numbers. Answer the questions. Done.
Nobody sees anyone else's answers. The tablet check-in is in Spanish too.
Ask your manager for a tablet PIN.
Your manager can set up your PIN.
Credit, not blame
Will I be blamed
for a bad reading?
The check-in is there to protect you and the people you feed. Say what you see, and the record says you did.
- Every fridge temperature you type has your name and the time on it. When the inspector reads the binder, the good morning was yours.
- A reading scores the same whether it is good or bad. Writing 45°F and moving the milk is the right thing, and the app says so:
Caught early ✓
. - Points are for on-time work, and they never go down. Kudos are private thank-yous.
- A weekly board is off unless your owner turns it on.
Look at the sample cafe before you decide anything.

Questions
Before you
start.
Will my boss see what I answer?
No. Your manager sees whether you are OK to work, not your answers. The answers are saved with your check-in. Manager screens do not show them.
What if I answer yes to something?
The app tells you what to do, like cover a cut or take no food work today. Your manager is told what to do, not the reason. New York's rule is the same: no one works while sick with an illness that spreads through food (10 NYCRR 14-1.70).
Do I need a food handler card in New York?
Not from the state: New York has no statewide card. Your county can require training (10 NYCRR 14-1.73). Monroe County wants a certified food worker present whenever the place is open. Tioga wants a Red Card holder on duty, Chautauqua a 3-hour course for one person in management, Westchester allergen-trained staff. In New York City the Food Protection Certificate holder may be your manager rather than you. Ask your manager what your county asks. Your certificate goes in the app once.
Who pays for the course?
We did not find a New York rule that says. In New York City the Health Department's online Food Protection course is free, and the exam is paid. For a county course, ask your manager.
Two years on the line. Do I still have to do lessons before I can type a fridge temperature?
If your certificate is on file, the list is short. If not, the short lessons and sign-offs come before your first food step. Your certificate goes in the app once.
Do I need a smartphone?
No. Use the shop tablet with your name and a 4-digit PIN.
Does it work with no signal?
Readings and reports are saved on your phone. They send by themselves when you are back online.
Will I be scored or ranked?
Points are for on-time work and never go down. A reading scores the same whether it passes or not. Named boards are off by default.
Is there Spanish?
The daily check-in, the tablet and the invite message are in Spanish. The rest of the app is English for now.
Your binder is ready when the inspector is.
