The plain answer
Is person in charge
a job title in the app?
No. It is a flag on a person, not a role.
The app has four roles: Owner, Admin, Manager and Staff. Person in charge is marked on top of one of them.
A manager or owner taps Put in charge
next to a name on the On-shift list. A Lead invite is a staff member who is already marked.
You keep your staff tabs. Your Today adds a card that says you are in charge.
In New York law, the person in charge has one named duty in Subpart 14-1. A fire, flood or power outage that could spoil food or warm the walk-in: you tell the health department at once (10 NYCRR 14-1.200). There is no statewide certificate. In New York City a Food Protection Certificate holder is on the premises and supervises all food work whenever you are open (Health Code 81.15). In Suffolk and Rockland counties the person in charge on a shift holds the county's certificate. Being in charge at 2 pm may mean you hold it. Ask your manager.
Someone cannot work
What if someone
can't work?
The list says No food work today
. It never says the symptom. New York's rule for the worker: no one works while sick with an illness that spreads through food (10 NYCRR 14-1.70). We found no state rule that has you report a sick worker. A guest who got sick from your food is reported to your health department within 24 hours (14-1.200). The rule is one tap away, so a short-staffed day is a plain outcome, not an argument.
Employee health: report, exclude, restrict
A sick worker stays off the line: no one works while sick with an illness that spreads through food (10 NYCRR 14-1.70). A guest sick from your food, or a fire, flood or power outage, is reported to your health department within 24 hours (14-1.200).

Tonight
So what is
different tonight?
Handed off. Go home.
The open list goes with the hand-off. Where the app cannot reach, it says so and tells you to tell them in person.
You can also nudge someone whose 3 pm sanitizer strip is late. Nag writes the message. You copy it and send it.

Questions
Before you
start.
Is person in charge a role in the app?
No. It is a flag on a person. The roles are Owner, Admin, Manager and Staff. A manager or owner can put someone in charge.
Do I need a certificate to be in charge in New York?
There is no statewide one. In New York City a Food Protection Certificate holder is on the premises and supervises all food work whenever you are open (Health Code 81.15). If you run the shift alone, the holder is you. In Suffolk County the person in charge holds a food protection certificate at all hours; in Rockland County, a Food Service Training Certificate. Elsewhere, ask your manager what your county asks.
The power went out at 2 pm. What do I do?
Tell the health department at once. The person in charge tells the health department that issued the permit about a fire, flood or power outage that could spoil food (10 NYCRR 14-1.200). Then write the walk-in reading and what you did; the app saves it with your name. Tell your manager or owner too.
A worker tells me she has hepatitis A. Who do I call?
She stays off food: no one works while sick with an illness that spreads through food (10 NYCRR 14-1.70). We found no state rule that has you report a sick worker; when in doubt, call your health department. In New York City that is the Bureau of Food Safety and Community Sanitation, (212) 676-1600. Tell your manager or owner too.
Do I get blamed for what the morning shift missed?
No. Each reading carries the name of the person who took it. The hand-off counts what was still open when you took over, with the note. What you did on your shift is yours; what was open before is on the record as open.
Will the next person get a text when I hand off?
No text. The hand-off goes on their list, and they see it when they open the app. In a browser, it can reach them as an alert once they say yes when the app asks. Tell them in person too.
What if nothing is open?
The screen says: Nothing to hand off. A clean close.
Can I see who is not cleared to work?
Yes. The list says Ready, Needs check-in or No food work today. It never says why.
Can I send a nudge to someone who is late?
Yes. A person in charge can use Nag, which writes the message. You copy it and send it yourself. The app sends no texts.
How does someone become a Lead?
A manager invites them as a Lead. They stay staff and are marked person in charge.
