For the person in charge

You run the shift. Hand it off clean.

It is 2:05 pm, the owner left at one, and the walk-in report is still open. See who is on and what is open. At close, pass it to the next person on their list.

The plain answer

Is person in charge
a job title in the app?

No. It is a flag on a person, not a role.

The app has four roles: Owner, Admin, Manager and Staff. Person in charge is marked on top of one of them.

A manager or owner taps Put in charge next to a name on the On-shift list. A Lead invite is a staff member who is already marked.

You keep your staff tabs. Your Today adds a card that says you are in charge.

In California law, the person in charge knows food safety and the major food allergens (HSC 113947). The manager certificate sits with at least one owner or employee per facility (HSC 113947.1), not with whoever runs a shift. Being in charge at 2 pm does not mean you hold it. Ask your manager who does.

Taking over

What do I see
when I take over?

Today shows who is on shift. Each person reads Ready, Needs check-in or No food work today. It never says why.

  • Manager: Today, Team, Checks, Report, More

You keep the staff tabs. Your Today adds the on-shift list and the close hand-off.

That is what changes on Today. The tabs stay the same.

2:05 pm

What about the walk-in
at 2 pm?

The owner left at one. A regular is waiting to pay, the new hire is asking where the sanitizer strips are, and the walk-in report is still open. During service only the urgent items show; the rest fold away. A bad reading or a report shows on your Today first when you are the person in charge on shift. The limit is 41°F (HSC 113996).

Someone cannot work

What if someone
can't work?

The list says No food work today. It never says the symptom. In California, the person in charge tells the county environmental health office about a diagnosed Salmonella, Shigella, E. coli (STEC), hepatitis A or norovirus. Two or more workers with a stomach illness at once: the same call (HSC 113949.5). The law names no hour count: call right away. The rule is one tap away, so a short-staffed day is a plain outcome, not an argument.

  • Employee health: report, exclude, restrict

A sick worker stays off the line. The person in charge tells the county environmental health office about a diagnosed Salmonella, Shigella, E. coli (STEC), hepatitis A or norovirus. Two or more workers sick at once: the same call (HSC 113949.5). No hour count: call right away.

CleanCleaver: Health questions before each shift. The on-shift list shows only Ready, Needs check-in or No food work today.

    California: HSC 113949.2, HSC 113950.5

Tonight

So what is
different tonight?

Handed off. Go home.

The open list goes with the hand-off. Where the app cannot reach, it says so and tells you to tell them in person.

You can also nudge someone whose 3 pm sanitizer strip is late. Nag writes the message. You copy it and send it.

Questions

Before you
start.

Is person in charge a role in the app?

No. It is a flag on a person. The roles are Owner, Admin, Manager and Staff. A manager or owner can put someone in charge.

Do I need a manager certificate to be in charge in California?

Not you in particular. California asks that the person in charge knows food safety and the major food allergens (HSC 113947). At least one owner or employee at the facility holds a food protection manager certificate (HSC 113947.1). That is one certificate per place, not one per shift. Ask your manager who holds it.

A worker tells me she has hepatitis A. Who do I call?

She stays off food. The person in charge tells the county environmental health office (HSC 113949.5); the law names no hour count, so call right away. In Los Angeles County that is the Department of Public Health, Environmental Health, (888) 700-9995. In San Diego County, the Department of Environmental Health and Quality, (858) 505-6900. Tell your manager or owner too.

Do I get blamed for what the morning shift missed?

No. Each reading carries the name of the person who took it. The hand-off counts what was still open when you took over, with the note. What you did on your shift is yours; what was open before is on the record as open.

Will the next person get a text when I hand off?

No text. The hand-off goes on their list, and they see it when they open the app. In a browser, it can reach them as an alert once they say yes when the app asks. Tell them in person too.

What if nothing is open?

The screen says: Nothing to hand off. A clean close.

Can I see who is not cleared to work?

Yes. The list says Ready, Needs check-in or No food work today. It never says why.

Can I send a nudge to someone who is late?

Yes. A person in charge can use Nag, which writes the message. You copy it and send it yourself. The app sends no texts.

How does someone become a Lead?

A manager invites them as a Lead. They stay staff and are marked person in charge.
